The Tribune clipping, dated November 19, 1959, attached to the back of this aerial photo reads "COSTLY COMPLEX-Completion next spring of massive Walnut Creek bypass will elimiante one more spot where commute-hour traffic has jammed up for years. Job, latest in series of Contra Costa County improvements, is one of most costly in area history. Six bridges cross in three levels at center." The interchange shown in this photo is at center, with what is now I-680 branching out from the interchange to Danville at bottom and Concord at right center. What is now Hiway 224 branches out from the interchanmge to the top.
