Caption from back of photo: "Trib C Jul 29, 1949: General view of the start of construction on the $693,000 Hayward Hetch Hetchy water project at Mission San Jose shows when pipe line has been laid from the portal on the hill to highway where digging operations are under way. Water is due at Hayward by January." Reporter is Gladys Williamson Also on back: 1/5th reduction - pipeline #1 - 3 col - 1st Fri. Surburban 1st Fri. #2 and #6646 Total size is 10" x 8". It has been marked off to 7 1/2" x 6 1/4". It is taken from across a road to the lower slope of the hills. The hills do hot have very much vegetation. On the left just above a driveway is a parked pick-up truck (facing the road and camera) with its driver's door open. There appears to be equipment in the bed of the truck and a pole with flag(?) protrudes from the passenger side. A worker has one hand on the window frame of the driver's door; his other hand is lower along the door frame. To the right of the truck is a small sign on a small stake and box. The sign aAppears to be about the size of a house "For Sale" sign. Behind the pick-up truck to its right is a light-colored sedan facing the road/future pipeline area that goes up the hill. On the road/pipeline area that goes up the hill is a piece of heavy machinery with operator going up the hill. At the end of this slick-looking road are three buildings, each with a small square opening. Behind these rectantular buildings is a grove of trees. Beyond the grove of trees and to the right is another larger building that has three square openings and behind it is another smaller building. Further up the road and to the left ot these buildings are three cylindrical storage tanks. To the right and left of the storage tanks are the tops of the hills. On the left is a small grove of trees. To the right are barren hillsides and some of the 15+ telephone/telegraph poles in the photo. These run across the tops and then down the hills. In the lower right is a windmill attached to a tank. To its right is a building. In front of the building there is a large pile of dirt with a sapling across the side, two lengths of small pipe and grass. To the left of the pile of dirt is a large piece of digging(?) equipment with three workers; two are standing and one is seated on a rock. Two men are in work pants and shirt; one man may be in overalls. All three men are wearing hats, one is a fedora type, one is a cap and ther other looks like a baseball cap. There is a sign in the roadway "R.A. Wattson Co.". The machinery is shaped like a "V" and appears to be made of metal. In the front is a ladder-like area with cross pieces. This "ladder" is in the middle and goes from the ground into an rectangular opening at the top. To the left or this opening is a large wheel/gear with a chain around it. Behind the machinery are telephone/telegraph poles going up the hill along the raod. To the left of the machinery is are two small poles in the ground in a grassy area next to the original driveway. Outside the highlighted area: at the bottom is more road; on the left are weeds/native plants, some several feet tall. Above this, staring to climb the hill, is a small dark building. Above the building and ot its left is a small grove of trees; above the trees is a hillside that looks like it has small mounds on it. Above this is a fence and lone tree.
