Text of caption from newspaper photo: "Takes Office - Mrs. March K. Fong (right) of Oakland accepts the gavel denoting presidency of the American Dental Hygienists' ssociation from Miss Margaret Thornton of Des Moines, ex-president. Tr Oct 8, 1956." Stamp on back says: Central Studios, Atlantic City, N.J. Two smiling women standing before light colored textured drapery looking at one another. Miss Thornton is on the left side of the photo in a dark dress. Her dark hair is in soft curls and is pulled away from her face and reachs her collar. She has a light colored earring with dark spots on it - perhaps a floral design. Her dark dress has three-quarter sleeves with satin trim around the sleeves and collar. From the collar the satin trim extends and ties into a bow. The dress buttons down the front (about two or three buttons below waist) and there is a fabric belt at the waist. On her left shoulder is a rose(?) corsage. Her left arm is extended at her side and there is a slender gold/silver watch just above her wrist. Her right arm is bent at the elbow and in her hand is the head portion of a gavel. She wears a ring with elevated stone on her right hand. Mrs. Fong is on the right side of the photo. Her dark hair is worn short and away from her face. She has no bangs. She is smiling at Miss Thornton. She wears a large earring of many small pieces. Her dark suit appears to be wool. The form fitting jacket is trimmed with a lighter color wool and the long sleeves turn back and create a cuff at the wrist. There are four round shell buttons on the jacket. On her left shoulder she wears a corsage of at least three orchids. On her right shoulder area appear two dots. Not clear if part of suit or spots on photo. In her right hand she holds the handle of the gavel; she also weas an oval ring on this hand. Her left arm is at her side but slightly bent at the elbow and her fingers are curled up below the bottom of her jacket. .
