Lake Merritt has always had a large population of waterfowl. The lake lies on the Pacific Flyway and is a stopping place for migratory birds. In 1870, Lake Merritt was declared a State Game Refuge-the first in the nation. Along the lake there is a bird feeding station; official feedings began in 1915. There is also a geodesic dome designed by Buckminster Fuller which has displays of ducks and geese and a Rotary Natural Science Center.
