California Kitchen Exhibit

magazine. Description: Hutching's California Magazine, July 1858. V. III, No.1. "California Animals" edition. Published in San Francisco, 1856-1861, by Hutchings & Rosenfeld. From the History Information Station: Hutchings' was a monthly magazine of stories, poetry, and essays about California history and nature. The July, 1858 edition discussed native animals, including the sea lions pictured on the title page, as well as the coyote, lynx, raccoon, grizzly, wolf, and mountain lion. Hutching's began publishing very shortly after California became a state. In focusing on California subjects, the magazine sought to prove that the state's intellectual life was thriving along with its' gold mines. Magazines like this one were important to many pioneers, for they provided readers with a sense of refinement and settled life absent on the frontier.
