This was the terminal for both local and trans-continental trains and was built in 1880, when the original ferry terminal and wharf was discontinued and torn down. View shows the electric suburban trains, which served the eastbay communities of Oakland, Alameda, Berkeley and San Leandro. Ferry service to the Oakland Pier was abandoned in Aug. 1958, and about two years later the building was dismantled to make way for the new container port facilities and also for BART's tube to San Francisco.
