Quilt. Description: Crazy Quilt, maroon satin border around quilt, made mostly of silks (brocades, taffetas, pile weaves, etc.) centered with 2 printed ribbons-one for 22nd Triennial Conclave of Knights Templar, held in S..F, Aug. 1883 - the other for Central Grand Chapter of Eastern Star, 1883. Condition very good; tasteless mid 20th century backing. Dimensions: 43 5/8" x 65". History: Made by Cora Laine, donor's Grandmother ca. 1883. Cora Laine's father was a California State Senator and worked on revision of State Constitution. Made while Cora Laine was a college student at San Jose; she graduated in 1884. Remarks: Our insurance price and appraised value do not approach agreement because of the poor qulity of the backing. (Appraised at Mary Strickler's Quilt-936 B San Rafael, by Linda Reuther for $500.00). Exhibited: "American Quilts: A Handmade LEgacy", Great Hall, Jan 12 - AP. 1, 1981. August 19, 1997, Inez Brooks-Myers: The backing of the quilt isn't so "tasteless as it is inappropriate. The 18th century style figures are not appropriate with the 19th century crazy quilt on the other side.
