From the History Information Station:
Object:  Handkerchief, jacket, cap, clipboard, and chair; script for "My Favorite Year," written by Norman Steinberg, directed by Richard Benjamin, starring Peter O'Toole, 1983.

History:  The movie director is at the center of the action. The director helps to choose the cast and the technical staff, including the cinematographers, designers, and editors; decides how to film each scene, how to interpret the script, and how the actors should move; and assists in the editing process, where the images, voices, music, and special effects are put together to create a finished film. On the set and in the cutting room, the director makes many of the decisions that determine what we see when we watch movies.
From Mack Sennett to John Huston to Woody Allen, movie directors have often been characterized as flamboyant personalities. This director's chair is draped with clothing to suggest the artistic glamor of a famous movie director.
