Nine planes, pilots and navigators are now undergoing tests at the Bay Farm Island Airport, Oakland, for their hop, Tuesday, Aug. 16, to Honolulu. The race to Honolulu will be one of the most spectacular feats in aviation ever staged. Photo shows William P. Erwin who will pilot the 'Dallas Spirit' to Honolulu (SF-FM) 8-13-27." Photo shows Erwin standing by his plane. Only the nose of the plane and part of the propeller are visible next to him. Erwin is wearing a light colored three piece suit, shirt and tie, and is holding a straw hat in his left hand. He is smiling for the camera, but his eyes are closed.
