According to the typewritten notation on the front of the photo, this is the "Reception on the return of 143rd Artillery, Battery "B" from France. Oakland Hotel, Oakland, Cal. Jan 3rd, 1919." The streets in front of the hotel are jammed with spectators, many waving flags, and the Battery B soldiers. Spectators are on rooftops, parapets, and signs, with more people looking out of windows. Automobiles on the streets are penned in by the crowd. On one of the commercial buildings at right top, the Arthur Ramage Co. has its sign, and on the front of the low building at upper center a sign bears the name Defenders Recreation Club.
