One inscription on the back of the photo reads "N.., Corner / 11th and Washington Sts./ about 1898-1899 / Bacon Bldg / later destroyed by fire. Another reads "Collection of / F. Phillips/ 275 Jayne Ave. / Oakland" The photo is of the Phillips & Walker Commission Merchants' store. What strikes the eye first are the three rows of beheaded chickens hanging down from racks beneath the ceiling of the store. One man has just used a long tool to bring one chicken down. Two other clerks (a woman and a man) are posed for the camera at right. At left a man is pouring some product from a barrel into a sack. At right a man is appraising the condition of a bunch of bananas [?]. Crates of produce are at the front of the store in two rows.
