The notations on the back of the photo read "American Trust Company" and "4 cols [columns]", but they do not shed much light on the scene other than the photo was probably part of a four-column story in the Oakland Tribune. The notation on the front of the photo at bottom reads "Telegraph Road looking north from Junction of 14th and Broadway Oakland" At this point, the road is graded earth, and it curves to the left halfway to the horizon. At the left of the road, there is a tall white fence. Between the road and the fence there is a gas street lamp. Indistinct houses are on the right side of the road in the distance.
