The Tribune clipping, dated March 18, 1959, on the back of the photo reads "THE SWATH OF PROGRESS Here is a bird's view of the Walnut Creek Bypass Freeway Interchange, a six-bridge-three-level highway maze that will go into service next December. The $8,800,000 project involves excavating 2,200,000 yards of dirt, installing 16 overpasses,wtih 4,844,000 pounds of steel. Work is ahead of schedule. Interchange will route traffic toward Concord [left lower corner], Danville [right lower corner] or Lafayette [center upper], with off-ramp to Walnut Creek."
