A portrait of an Oakland policemen's ball. With one exception, the men are all attired in tuxedos. The men are posed in two semi-circular rows, irrespective of height, so that many of the taller men are in front of the smaller men. [this suggests that the men in front have either seniority or, more likely, rank. JM 11/17/2000] There is yet another grouping: officers on a stage on which some of the men are completely hidden by flags mounted on staffs. Some few men wear award ribbons on their chests. The Oakland P.D. flag is at left, and the U.S. flag is at right. [A sign of the times: there are only two women in this photo of a policemen's ball, one at extreme left and the other at extreme right. And there are certainly no Blacks or Asians JM 11/17/2000]
