The Tribune photo, dated September 26, 1938, has the following caption attached: "Operating in the same fashion as the 6,000,000 volt atom smasher at the Westinghouse laboratories in Pittsburgh, this electrostatic generator will be shown Wednesday evening at Hunter Hall by Dr. Phillips Thomas." The photo shows Dr. Thomas [?] looking up toward what looks like the metallic head of a giant mushroom, mounted on a narrow metal column. Dr. Thomas's hand is 2/3rds of the way up the column.
