The Tribune photo, dated march 24, 1991, has the following caption on the back: "Moving AIDS quilt exhibit in Oakland Marjorie Smith weeps after viewing her contribution to the Names Project AIDS Memorial Quilt she made for her son, Dan Dale Barker. A vivid tribute to AIDS dead, the massive quilt is at the Oakland Convention Center at 10th and Broadway this weekend. Admission is free. The quilt's panels, saluting 14,000 people from all over the world, are fashioned from lace and burlap, from racing silks and fur; it is adorned with glitter, credit cards, stuffed animals and wedding rings; and some cremation ashes have even been sewn into it." Marjorie Smith sits in a wheelchair in the foreground. A handwritten caption at the bottom of the photo reads "Marjorie Smith weeps for her son, Dan Dale Barker, who died from AIDS on 5-9-[19]90 at the age of 39. Smith came all the way from Santa Cruz to see the [continued on back of photo] patchwork piece she made for her son. It was the first time she had seen it on display."
