The Tribune photo, dated April 23, 1959, has the following caption on the back: "TWO DOWN--Two of the National League's top stars had rugged going in yesterday's action. In the photo above [2000.1.1320] Cincinnati first baseman Frank Robinson of Oakland lies prone at homeplate after being struck in the head by a pitch from Pirate hurler Bobby Friend. Looking on are Umpire Hal Dixon and Buc catcher Smokey Burgess. In the photo below [this photo-20001.1.1319] Willie Mays of the Giants is aided by Jackie Brandt after being struck by a foul line drive while on third base. Both men took time out for first aid and then continued the game."
