The Tribune photo, dated Sunday March 19, 1989, has the following caption on the back: "Tom McCubbins of Oakland selects produce at Berkeley Bowl market." A typewritten notation also on the back reads "Tom McCubbins of Oakland has a mouthful of a shopping list while picking out tomatoes at the Berkeley Bowl. He says he is a frequent shopper there." Mr. McC is bent over the display, grasping tomatoes with his right hand, holding a bag ful in his left, and his shoppiong list in hismouth. A scale is behind him. [Berkeley Bowl is, at this writing, still a Berkeley institution. For many years it was located in a former bowling alley on Shattuck Avenue north of Ashby Avenue. It has recently moved into a larger building two or three blocks south of its former location, still offering a large variety of food stuff, including poultry and meats. The tenant of the building prior to Berkeley Bowl's moving in was a branch of the Thrifty Drug Store chain. JM 11/28/2000]
