A handwritten notation on the back of the photo, dated January 17, 1981, reads "Herman's Landing 4 Sale" The landing is nothing more than a low-lying sandbar on which someone has planted the sign mentioned above. A flock of seagulls has indeed landed there, against a backdrop of downtown Oakland, including Kaiser Center and the top of the Tribune Tower, both at right.
