A reprint of an 1884 photograph showing a horse-drawn streetcar moving east on East 12th street at the southwest end of Lake Merritt. A wooden fence separates the streetcar tracks and a pasture in the foreground. On the fence facing the camera there is a sign advertising "TRAPPERS OIL" in large letters. In the pasture on the near side of the fence, a cow grazes. The masts of two or three sailing ships can be seen on the Lake close to the trolley tracks. Possible evidence of the old Lake outlet to the Estuary is in the abandoned timbers of what may have been a dock at the lower left corner.
