This a photo copied by Roy H. Williams on September 12, 1986, and it was run in the September 15, 1986 edition of the Tribune. The caption on the back reads "Artist's conception of a four-lane bridge over Lake Merritt, proposed in 1938 by Joseph B. Strauss, the engineer of the Golden Gate Bridge." In the drawing. the bridge runs from the west shore at the left lower corner to the east shore at upper right. The Oakland hills are in the background. Another, feeder section of the proposed bridge comes in from the left edge to the center of the photo, forming an inverted "Y" A portico is at center where the bridges join. Automobiles are on the roadways, and sail- and motor- boats are on the lake.
