The Tribune photo, dated June 13, 1978, has the following caption on the back: "THE FERRYBOAT OAKLAND IN 1938 AT THE ALAMEDA MOLE One of many famed ferries that carried commuters across the Bay." A handwritten notation, also on the back, reads "The ferry, the 'Oakland' was among the many famous ferries docking here at the western tip of Alameda, powered by huge paddle wheels, bound for S.F. Passengers connected with electric trains." The Oakland is at the terminal, berthed between wooden pilings. No one is on either of its main decks, but smoke is issuing from the the smoke stack. A glimpse of one of the rocking arms that powered the paddle wheels can be seen just this side of the far pilot house. The decking to the right of the terminal is also devoid of people, and neither are there any street cars on the streetcar tracks at right center.
