The Tribune photo, dated May 1, 1952 [Centennial Edition], has the following caption on the back: "The Oakland Guard--complete with a pair of drummer boys--stood at attention for this 1865 photograph on Broadway at 5th Street. In the background is the site on which was built later the Alameda County Hall of Records building. The Oakland Guard was organzied at the outbtreak of the Civil War, and took an important part in helping suppress a secret attempt to throw the state into a into a state of anarchy, and to give it over to the Confederacy. The first Captain of the Company was James Brown, subsequently City Marshall of Oakland. At a later day, Henry N. Morse, Sheriff of Alameda County, was elected Captain, and for several terms he filled that position." The Guard is shown in one row, holding their rifles. The flag is being held aloft by one of the Guard members at center, and the two drummer boys are at left. The ground on which the guard is arrayed is an open field, and there is nothing but oak woodland in the center and right background. Some few commercial buildings fade into the background at left.
