The caption on the back reads "Charles W. Roberts, of 329 Henry Street, a cook at the railway commissary, bastes some of the turkeys in his ovens. He cooks hundreds of pounds of them daily for the diners." The article is dated February 29, 1944. There is hand-written notes on the back of the image as well that indicates "Commissary #2." The image itself is of an African-American cook who is basting turkey in a large oven.
