Hegenberger and Lester Maitland were the first to fly from the mainland to Hawaii. They left from what became the Oakland Airport in a Fokker tri-motor named the "Bird of Paradise" on June 28, 1927. They landed at Wheeler Field in Hawaii 25 hours and 49 minutes later. (information provided by "The Challenging Skies" by C.R. Roseberry.)
