The Tribune photo, dated Janauray 22, , 1972, has the following caption on the back: "Special effrects man plots 'grenade explosion' that will kill actor James Brolin, then...." The Russian sergeant, played by actor James Brolin, is supporting himself on his hands while almost in the prone position. He is holding a grenade in his left hand and an automatic rifle in his right. A special effects technician is positioning him. Two rods are driven vertically into the ground. Piles of either fake snow or shaved ice are on the ground.
