The Tribune photo, dated July 30, 1954, has the following caption on the back: "Indicated on aerial photo above are the new runway and terminal areas planned in the $11,500,000 expansion of the Metropolitan Oakland International Airport. Shown in white and designated by arrow is the plot of underwater land off Bay farm Island needed to assure that planes will take off and land over water, avoiding built-up areas." The photo is taken from south of the airport, looking north to Alameda and Oakland. Port of Oakland property, the then present airport, the new runway, San Leandro Bay, Bay Farm Island and other cultural details are shown by markings.
