The typewritten notation attached to the back of the photo reads "SAN FRANCISCO AIR PORT NEARING COMPLETION FOR HONOLULU RACE San Francisco's Municipal Air port is nearing completion for the start of the San Francisco to Honolulu air race scheduled for noon, Agust 12. At least 12 airplanes of various types and makes are expected to hopp [sic] off in competition for the $35,000.00 offered by Mr. Dole, the Hawaii Pineapple king. When completed, San Francisco's air port will be one of the best int eh country. "Photo shows a general view of the San Francisco air port, showing (center) the runway that will be used by the Hawaii fliers. 7/26/[19]27" In the foreground of the photo there is a hard-tired dump truck standing alongside of a tractor grader/scraper. Three automobiles are in the photo, one at right center and the other two on the runway at upper center. A steam roller is compacting the earth on the runway, on which water is being sprayed.
