This is a yearbook from Oakland High School. On the front cover is "The Aegis, issued by the class of June '99 Oakland High School." Book contains photographs of faculity and students of the graduating class as well as poems, descriptions of sporting events , clubs, fratnerities and sororities, and even the debate team. At the back are advertisements for various local companies. Faculity member of particular interest appear on page 7 (Letita Eleanor Johnson) and a student on p. 13 (Arthur F. Kales). Letitia Eleanor Johnson sometimes called "Nellie", picture on page 7, bottom row, middle photo, was the youngest daughter of Gold Rush pioneers Eliza Jane Steen Johnson and John Johnson. Letitia graduated from University of California, Berkeley in 1888 after which she lived with John Muir and his wife for about a year when she first started teaching. Letitia never married. Graduated from Cal in 1903 with a law degree and later became interested in the pictorialist movement.
