Geta have a pale color wood base, with a layer of white rubber as a sole (1/4" thick at toe, 3/8" thick at heel.) Two stiffened cords of plum colored velveteen, connected underneath the heel by a knot of rope, are drawn through two holes in the base of the shoe near the heel. They are also attached to the base at the toe, creating a short strap that is worn between the toes. There is a brown sticker with Japanese characters on the sole of both geta. No left or right distinguished. These geta were worn by Sei Kubota Kimura, the donor's grandmother (b. 1887-d.1980). Kaoru Kitagawa, 11/7/02: The sticker on the sole states the store brand name, "Fukuya." The date is probably 1960s.
