Yorty was a feisty conservative, known for his outspoken views.Yorty, Samuel William (1909-1998) -- also known as Samuel W. Yorty; Sam Yorty -- of Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif. Born in Lincoln, Lancaster County, Neb., October 1, 1909. Democrat. Member of California state assembly, 1936, 1948; Democratic candidate for U.S. Senator from California, 1940 (primary), 1954; served in the U.S. Army Air Force in World War II; U.S. Representative from California, 1951-55 (14th District 1951-53, 26th District 1953-55); mayor of Los Angeles, Calif., 1961-73; defeated, 1973, 1981; candidate for Democratic nomination for President, 1972. Died of pneumonia, following a stroke, in Los Angeles, Los Angeles County, Calif., June 5, 1998. Cremated; ashes scattered.
