One print of a pen-sketch by F. O. Gardiner (made in 1903) exhibited at the California State Fair in 1907. It was reproduced and presented to graduates of Heald's Stockton Business College ca. 1908-1910.
It was given to the donor's grandmother, May West Foley, who graduated from Heald's in Stockton. It is unclear if she received the rpint from the school, from a friend, or from another source.
The image shows a stereotyped view of an African American man holding the tools of a "boot black".
This appears to be a reproduction of a pen and ink drawing.
