From newspaper caption pasted on back: "GRAND WELCOME Oakland's Chinatown community staged its annual welcome for the new year Saturday with a parade which included the trditional lion's dance shown here at Ninth and Harrison Streets, where the reviewing stand was located. Actually, the new year began Tuesday but the 11th annual Childeren's Chinese New Year's Parade was timed just right -- between storms." February 11, 1978. Chinese lion's head behind held up by person in long-sleeved white turtleneck sweater, dark pants and shoes and the short body in the hands of a person in light colored long-sleeved shirt, dark pants and athletic shoes. The lion's head is pointed on top, has protruding ears trimmed with white fringe, large open eyes of various circles of colors, flat nose and a large open mouth. It appears to have a white mustache and beard. Over the left ear and down to the mouth cascade what appear to be large balls of a dark color. The lower section of the open mouth show painted-in white teeth. The bottom of the mouth is of a light color with a dark center portion that has two dark extensions at the top and bottom that go to the teeth. The body of the lion is fairly short and and flat. It is horizontal with the street and appears to be of a dark fabric with white or light colored designs on it. It is held at the back by the young man with both hands that rest on either side of him. He is not covered at all by the lion's body. Behind and to the sides of the lion is a crowd watching the parade. There is a highrise condominium/apartment building in the left corner of the photo and commercial buildings in front. On the right side of the photo are lowrise builidngs with people on the street watching the parade. A stop light, pedestrian sign "WALK" and street lamps are also visible. Just to the right of the stop light Chinese architectural detail on a building is barely visible. While most of the crowd is looking away from the camera, one man with full light colored hair, long sleeve shirt, jeans and sun glasses is looking at the lion.
