From notes on back of photo: "Chinese New Years celebration kickoff; Union Square, SF." February 19, 1983 On the left side of photo is a small dragon or dog's head in profile. There is probably a person in it as what could be a white shirt and arm are visible. The head is turned and looking away. It has a dark carved top knot, dark pupils in white eyes, dark nose and upper mouth with carvings or relief painting. The mouth is slightly open and shows upper and lower teeth with fangs. The lower lip is dark with carvings or relief painting. Along the side of the head are pieces of dark cloth to simulate ears and/or decorations. The neck is made up of long dark strands of "hair" or fringe that hang down from the bottom of the mask. The body of the animal are very long stands of white/light colored shaggy "hair." The animal is on a stage. The rest of the photo is of the crowd. The first row consists of four Asian children, three boys and a girl. Two of the boys have their arms straight out on the stage, one is holding one of the black cords that go from left to right. The other two boys have their arms on the edge of the stage. Behind them is a mixed crowd of chldren and adults of many ethnic origins looking at the stage.
