Notes wirtten on back of photo: "2 Chinese lions - kickoff New Years celebration" February 19, 1983. From upper left of photo: Two men(?) wearing dark pants with white stripe down the side and white tee shirts, each holding above their heads the head portion of two separate lion dance costumes. The lions are fierce looking with much painted detail on the faces. Their bodies extend from the head and stream past the men holding the heads. The bodies are darkw ith wavy white horizontal decorations/lines -- perhaps to suggest scales. They are on a stage (with amplifiers to the left of the lion and in front of a tree) in Union Square in San Francisco. To the right of the lions are many tall buildings. One prominent building is Saks Fifth Avenue in the upper middle of the photo. In front of the buildings (bordering Union Square) are three large trees evergreen trees that have flat tops. There is a large crowd of people watching the lions. Many heads of black, white and brown hair as well as young and old make up the crowd.
