Made in China

A: Jacket of red silk, with a small floral pattern woven in. It is embroidered, satin stitch and split stitch, polychrome flowers. It fastens down the front with four simple loop and knot buttons. The neckline, the front, the hem and the cuffs are all trimmed with a piece of light blue braid, brocaded with bright pink flowers and green leaves. All of the edges are trimmed in black braid. White satin label at inner nape is stamped "Made in China." B: Trousers are made of the same red silk, and the legs are embroidered. The cuffs of the trousers are trimmed with the light blue braid and the narrower black braid.

This little red outfit was probably purchase by the donor's grandmother, Lee Shee. Bette wore this outfit, when she was a child (see photo in donor file, Bette being held by her father, Harry Chinn) to a ship christening at the Kaiser shipyards in Richmond, while her mother christened a ship. (See 2005.43.1.)
