A nationally syndicated political columnist and self-proclaimed former right-winger, progressive populist; Huffington was an independant candidate during the 2003 recall election. During the recall she actively campaigned against Arnold Schwarzenegger. She lost and placed fifth amongst the candidates, capturing 0.6% of the votes. During the recall, she described her candidacy against Schwarzenegger as "the hybrid versus the Hummer," making reference to her ownership of the gasoline-electric hybrid Toyota Prius and his ownership of the gas guzzling Hummer.
