Def. Attny-Les Branton, Def. Attny Howard Moore, Angela Davis

Drawing (politcal cartoon) done in pencil, crayon and oil pastels, of Angela Davis confering with her attorneys. Written below each individual is their name: Le Branton, Howard Moore and Andela Davis. Branton and Moore are depicted in dark gray coats, Miss Davis is in a turtle neck, perhaps a sweater under a jumper, in black, blue and green. Signed "Ritz" at the proper left edge.

Angela Davis was arrested as a suspected conspirator in the attempt to free George Jackson from a Marin County Courtroom, August 7, 1970, because the guns used were registered in her name. She was briefly on the FBI Most-Wanted List, but eventually she was acquitted of all charges in 1972, after a large campaign to "Free Angela Davis." In 1980 she ran for Vice President of the United States on the Communist Party ticket. (She joined the Communist Party when Martin Luther King was assassinated in 1968.) She is an activist promoting women'd rights and racial justic. She has taught at UCLA, UC Santa Cruz and SFU. She has lectured in all fifty of the United States as well as abroad. In 1994 she was honored by her appointment to the University of California Presidential Chair in African American and Feminist Studies. This, in spite of a 1970 threat by the then Governor, Ronald Reagan, that she'd never again teach in the University of California system,
