Dressmaking and Home Sewing - Central Trade School

Photographic print (black and white, glossy) of an open casket. On display is the type of casket liner and pillow which could be made by students at the Central Trade School.

Image 2006.5.80 shows the equipment used for creating the fancy creasing and pleating on pillows. Image 2006.5.81 shows a pillow. The ABC Casket Company was in Oakland. It is possible that students trained at "Central Trade School"/"Laney Trade and Technical Institute" could find employment with such a company, having been schooled to used the equipment shown in 2006.5.80, and to create the finished product shown in this image. It is interesting that the courses were taught under a department of "Dressmaking and Home Sewing;" clearly, a casket interior is neither part of dressmaking, nor is it thought of as home sewing in contemporary American culture.
