Launching Day of the S.S. "John E. Wilkie," The Permanente Metals Corporation, Shipyard Number Two, Richmond, California. July 8, 1943. Photograph No. 2L-14

This photograph shows the speakers' platform (curved "Deco" styling in red, white and blue) set up infront of the S.S. John E. Wilkie before it was christened by sponsor, Mrs. Mary Lew Chinn. Family and friends are seated on the platform, Kaiser dignitaries are at the microphone and closing a large box (probably from whence came one of the large rose bouquets) while the pastor, Vivian Lew, Doreen Jone, Mrs. Mary Lew Chinn and Bette Chinn look on. The large audience watching the event is standing. They present a varied group, some workers in helmets, men wearing suits, at least one woman in a suit, a woman in uniform (standing near the stairs to the platform), and some children. Notice the up-swept hairdo of the woman in the foreground, almost in the center (front) of the image; her hair style is held in place with plastic combs, popular at the time.
