This black and white photograph of the S.S. John E. Wilkie on launching day is one of a series of images made the day that Mrs. Mary Chinn [Mary Lew Chinn] was the sponsor of the ship and christened it in Richmond. The ship is shown in its slip, with a worker in the front, proper left. Red, white and blue bunting is tied to the prow.

Kaiser shipyards in Richmond are known for the large number of ship produced there during World War II.
