A black and white photograph taken at the launching of the S.S. John E. Wilkie, showing G. D. Hom, Bette Chinn (then Bette Lew) child in the foreground, Mrs. Mary Lew Chinn (Sponsor of the ship, who christened it) holding roses and wearing an orchid on her black silk embroidered jacket, Doreen Jone, wearing a lei (Flower Girl), and Vivian Lew, also wearing an orchid and carrying roses (Maid of Honor).

Mary Chinn said that her uncle, who won a raffle at the shipyard which allowed him to select someone the to Christen the ship, asked that she and the others participating in the event wear Chinese garments.
