Launching Day of the S.S. "John E. Wilkie," The Permanente Metals Corporation, Shipyard Number Two, Rochmond, California. July 8, 1943. Photograph No. 2L-5

This black and white photograph shows Mrs. Mary Lew Chinn, red, white and blue ribbon covered champagne bottle in hand, taking aim at the S.S. John E. Wilkie, just before she launches the ship. With her are the Flower Girl, Doreen Jone, wearing a lei around her neck and a ribbon bow in her hair. Behind Mrs. Chinn is the Maid of Honor, Vivian Lew. In the distance are heads of a few of the members of the crowd gathered for the christening, and the hills of the City of Richmond. Doreen, Vivian and Mrs. Chinn are all dressed in traditional Chinese garments of the era. All three are looking directly at the camera.
