From back of photograph: "Chinese Lion dance in Oakland China Town." From caption on back of photograph: "With firecrackers popping and children dancing, Chinese lion dancers kicked off Year of the Boar festivities in Oakland's Chinatown and San Francisco's Union Square on Saturday. Above, a lion dancer moves along 12th Street in downtown Oakland, where merchants offered contributions to charity in return for the sidewalk performances, complete with drums, cymbals and gongs." A man in a Chinese lion costume dances down the sidewalk of 12th Street in Oakland, as onlookers watch. All of them are Asian American. A man in the foreground is making an unkown gesture. It is still daytime and no other fellow lion dancers are visible in the photograph. The cars in the backgound appear to be of 1980s' vintage.
