From caption on back of photograph: "The traditional cross-campus processional ushers in the new academic year at College of the Holy Names, on the shore of Lake Merritt. Other opening events included the tradional Mass of the Holy Ghost and an informal reception for freshmen and other new students, held last night at the college social hall." A long processional through the center of the College of the Holy Names. All the students are female and dressed in identical caps and gowns. The visible students are somewhat racially diverse, with Caucasion, Asian American, and African American faces all visible. A Mercury Eight automobile is parked near the procession. Campus buildings can be seen in the background.
