From caption on back of photograph: "One of the nearly 400 birds who were banded during the feathered census at Lake Merritt yesterday is 'ringed' by E. B. von Adelung (left) and George Ehmann, while Miss Matty Brown and Mrs. Ehmann (right) register him. The service, started under Ehmann's direction, is carried out mainly by volunteer workers." Two men in hats attach a ring to a bird's foot for their census. The two women at the table next to them write down information. The table is scattered with record-keeping equipment (pen and paper, rings, boxes).
