From caption on back of photograph: "The main street of Alturas, shown here under normal conditions, was flooded with six feet of water today after a dam break sent millions of gallons of water pouring on the Modoc County seat. Hundreds of persons were endangered, and some buildings undermined. Six hundred residents fled the town." The wide main street down the center of Alturas. The street is unpaved, and the ground looks wet, muddy, and snowy. It is evidently winter; aside from the snow, the branches of a tree in the foreground are bare. A few cars are parked along the edges of the street. Along the main street is a hotel, electric store, drugstore, and other businesses including the Modoc Meat Co. The street looks abandoned of people except for a few men lounging outside a cafe.
