The scene is a protest at the Presidio in San Francisco. At the center of the frame is a flag-draped "coffin," sitting on top of some crowd control barriers. Behind the coffin is a female military police officer, in fatigues and a riot helmet with its visor up. Behind her is another sodier (male, African American), who is wearing a cap, not wearing a helmet. In the foreground are two young people with long hair, waving a homemade wooden cross (on the left side of the frame) and a peace sign flag (on the right side of the frame). On verso is the photographer's stamp, "Tribune Photo By" and "Dennis Lee," and the date stamp, "Jan 18, 1991." Also on verso is the handwritten description, in red ball point pen: "A military police officer stands guard at the Presidio gate behind a fake, flag draped coffin and demonstrators holding a cross and a peace flag."
