Handwritten on back, "4 Cols Hayward Firemen county Centennial- To Verbara". The caption that ran with the picture in the paper it was printed in has been pasted to the back: "PIONEER-Before Haywood grew up to become Hayward, its firemen boasted this hand-drawn and hand-pumped 'fire engine.' In 1870 the entire department turned out in front of the old Hayward Hotel for this photograph. The men are: Left to right, Rex Allen, H.F. Larrabe, William Hayward (for whom the town was named), Chris Herman, C.T. Ward, who was Haywood's first fire chief; F.D. Atherton, Asa Collins, J.L. Rivers, A.R. Hall and Charles Barnes." Image depicts the ten men standing in front of the engine, posing for the photo.
