From the caption that ran with the image: "The U.S.S. San Francisco, home after distinguishing herself in sea fighting off the Solomon Islands, is pictured above soon after she was launched at Mare Island Navy Yard in March, 1933. But she is not the first naval ship of the name. Her predecessor (lower picture) was a heavy cruiser launched in 1889 at what is now the San Francisco yard of Bethlehem Steel Company.
